Masalah Bad Sector

Saya ingin meminta maklumat dari saudara/saudari mengenai pc saya yg bermasalah.sekarang ni bila saya log on pc ni,dia akan keluar message run diskscan sebab sblm ni pc ni tidak di shut down properly.Bila run diskscan,ada message keluar mengatakan ada bad clusters.Saya nak tahu adakah ini menunjukkan hard disk dah crash.Kalau begitu apa yg perlu saya lakukan samada kena tukar harddisk atau tukar component yg tertentu saja. pandangan saudara/saudari amatlah diharapkan sebab saya kurang pengetahuan tentang hardware/software ni.

Komputer kita menyimpan data di hard drive dalam unit yang di panggil clusters. Setiap clusters mengandungi sekurang-kurangnya 4kb data. Kita boleh anggap hard disk kita macam sebuah peti sejuk (freezer) yang dipenuhi dulang ais kiub (ice cube trays). Ice cube trays tu adalah clusters dan ice cube adalah sektor yang memenuhi setiap clusters.
Scan disk memeriksa errors dalam clusters. Kalau ia jumpa walaupun hanya satu bad sector dalam satu cluster – ia akan menandakan keseluruhan cluster sebagai bad (tidak boleh digunakan). Kita tak boleh baca atau simpan apa-apa data pada bad clusters.

Ada 2 jenis cluster errors:

1. soft errors
Berlaku bila signal magnetik hard disk lemah atau jika formatnya lari dan kita tak boleh baca atau simpan data pada area itu. Kita boleh baiki dengan reformat hard disk.

2. hard errors
Adalah kerosakan fizikal pada hard disk (tercalar atau terhentak) – tak ada cara untuk baikinya – kena tukar hard disk lain.
Kalau hard disk kita ada banyak sangat (beribu) bad clusters – maknanya sebahagian besar hard disk kita tidak boleh dipakai.
Kita boleh lakukan pemeriksaan (diagnostic) dan pembetulan hard disk dengan gunakan program samada:

1. Partition Magic – www.powerquest.com
2. SpinRite – www.grc.com
3. macam2 lagi

Kalau komputer kita masih lagi dalam waranti – hantar komputer kita kepada mereka yang berkenaan untuk di periksa.

Windows XP default theme hilang...

1. Go to Start > Run and type services.msc and press Enter key to open the Services window. Here, navigate to Themes service, and right-click on it and select Properties, and make sure that the Start Up type is set to Automatic. And if the service is stopped, click the Start button to start it.

2 Locate the Luna.theme file manually: Right click on the desktop and choose Properties. On the Themes tab, choose the Browse... option. Next browse and locate the file C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Luna.theme and apply this as theme.

3 Luna.theme file not present: If Luna.theme file itself is not present, then it has to be restored back. Download this Zip file from Kelly’s Korner, and then extract the contents of this file to C:\Windows directory. Then, apply this theme as given in previous step.

4 Registry fix: If the above steps do not solve the problem, then there is a chance of changes in the default Registry values related to Themes. Download this Registry fix from Kelly’s Korner, and merge it with the Registry. Restart the computer to make the changes to take effect.

Make Drive Write Protected

One reader mailed us asking how can he make his portable USB drive write protected so no data can be deleted or added on the pen drive, this is what he said in his mail

I want to make my drive write protected on every computer where I connect my drive

Portable drives or cards can be write protected by two ways either by physical lock provided on some of the pen drives, but locking the drive with physical lock is not a good way as any one can move the physical lock and make your drive writable.

Make Drive Write Protected With Physical Lock

Second method to make the drive write protected involves a registry hack which actually is computer dependent not the drive as it deals with registry.

Note: With this registry hack you will actually make all the removable drives connected to your computer write protected, as this registry hack instructs windows to make any removable storage device write protected.

Write Protect Instructions

Download writeprotect.bat in a zip package from here and extract the files on pen drive and double click writeprotect.bat to make your drive write protected. You will need to eject your pen drive once after launching the batch file to make your drive write protected on the computer.

Disable Write Protect Instructions

Download disablewriteprotect.bat in a zip package from here (this package is same as bove, download any of these two) and extract the files on the pen drive and double click disablewriteprotect.bat to disable write protection on your pen drive. You will need to eject your pen drive once after launching the batch file to disable write protection.

Note: I have tested these batch files on Windows XP and it should also work on windows vista too.
